This exhibition of photographic works published by the Canadian Photographic Portfolio Society (CPPS) highlights the launch of a new commission by Jessica Eaton. Acclaimed for her innovative experiments in colour photography, Eaton applies unique analogue techniques to manipulate properties of light. In her vibrant images she pushes the rhetoric of abstraction to provoke questions about perceptual experience. The photographs in this new series are based on light bending through glass prisms. They allude to photography as a process of drawing with light, specifically Berenice Abbott’s “The Science Pictures.” A photography graduate from Emily Carr University who now lives in Montreal, Eaton has quickly risen to international prominence. She has exhibited widely including the Photographer’s Gallery, London, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Daegu Photography Biennale, South Korea. She was awarded the 2012 Photography Jury Grand Prize at the Hyères Festival in France. Eaton is represented by Jessica Bradley, Toronto, Higher Pictures, New York and M + B Gallery, Los Angeles.

CPPS at CAPTURE! showcases commissions by distinguished Vancouver artists – Rodney Graham’s Cast a Pall, a photographic diptych produced in 2008 based on two of his Black Squares (My Top 100) monochromes and Liz Magor’s Military through the Ages (1996), ten digitally-altered portraits taken at military re-enactment events. Also featured is Love Mansion (1977) by the influential conceptual artist David Askevold that is based on the infamous history of a house in California. Also available for viewing and purchase are portfolios by Angela Grauerholz, David Hoffos, Hadley+Maxwell, and Cheryl Sourkes. Each portfolio of pints is conceived as a cohesive artwork, and many of them are housed in custom-designed boxes. Visit www.cppsonline.com for details.
